Unemployment claims are positively surprising, falling in December and January; ILO unemployment rate rises to 5.1%

The Unemployment claims in the UK have fallen by 20,000 during the month of January, as published by the National Statistics Office (ONS), notably improving the expected rise of 35,000. In addition, the December data has greatly improved to -202,400 from the +7,000 published a month ago.

The ILO unemployment rate for December has risen one tenth to 5.1%, as expected, thus reaching its highest level since March 2016.

The average earnings of British workers including bonuses is up 4.7% in the three months from October to December, surpassing the previous 3.7% and the 4.2% expected. Excluding bonuses, revenues are up 4.1%, improving on the 3.6% previously and the 4% expected.
