Unemployment goes to 8% by the end of the year, says Guedes

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes said this Thursday (15) that the unemployment rate in Brazil should reach 8% by the end of 2022.

In an interview with the radio “A Voz do Brasil”, Guedes said that, if this happens, it will be the lowest rate in the last 15 years.

“She is now at 9%. At the end of the year, it goes to 8%. It will be the lowest rate in the last 15 years”, he stressed.

According to the minister, the country has created 17 million jobs since what he called “rock bottom”, the most rigid moment of the Covid-19 pandemic. “There are almost 600 thousand jobs a month”, he pointed out.

According to Guedes, currently, 100 million Brazilians are working, a record in history. “All sectors, in all regions, created jobs”.

The minister also celebrated the “resumption of the trajectory of economic growth, well-being, employment and income”.

“We had warned that the Brazilian economic policy of reaction to the pandemic – maintaining structural reforms, preserving jobs, saving lives, vaccinating the population – would have an effect”, he recalled.

During the interview, Guedes also mentioned the decline in the economy of developed countries to show the positive Brazilian scenario.

“We fell much less than other economies. They said that Brazil was going to fall 10% and, in fact, all advanced countries ended up falling more than Brazil. England fell 9.7%; Italy, 8.7%, France, 7.6%; Germany, 5.6%; Japan, 4.5%; and Brazil, 3.9%”, he began.

“We went back to V. It hit rock bottom and came back fast. It grew by 4.5%. This year, who said there was going to be a recession, are already revising upwards all the time. I think we will reach a growth of 3% this year”, predicted Guedes.

In another assessment, he pointed out that, for the first time, Brazil will have lower inflation than the United States and England.
