Unemployment rate in OECD countries drops to 5% in April

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reports that the unemployment rate among the countries in the group dropped from 5.1% in March to 5.0% in April. As a result, the OECD records a 12-month sequence of falling unemployment.

The unemployment rate was at or below pre-pandemic level in three-quarters of OECD countries in April. The number of unemployed within the OECD also continued to fall, reaching 34 million, or 500,000 less than the pre-Covid-19 level.

In the euro zone, the unemployment rate was stable at 6.8% in April, remaining at that level for the third straight month. Unemployment rose in a quarter of common currency bloc nations, with the biggest increase seen in Greece.

Outside the euro zone, the biggest drop in the unemployment rate was recorded in Colombia in April, says the OECD.

The entity’s statement also recalls that the unemployment rate does not capture the non-employed outside the workforce, either because they are not actively looking for a job or because they are not available to work.
