UNESCO dedicates World Education Day to Afghan women

Education is a human right, a public good and also a public responsibility. Because of this Unesco has decided to dedicate World Education Day to all those women who in Afghanistan they cannot receive one. Around the world, UNESCO works to ensure equal access to quality education for all boys and girls, throughout their lives. In Afghanistan this direct is denied to all girls.

Just over a month ago, the Taliban authorities banned women from attending universities. This is the latest ban on education. Afghanistan is the only country in the world where access to education for women and girls has been suspended indefinitely. No secondary school, no university for women.

“No country in the world should prevent women and girls from getting an education. Education is a universal human right that must be respected,” he said Unesco director general Audrey Azoulay. “The international community has a responsibility to ensure that the rights of Afghan girls and women are restored without delay. The war against women must end.”

According to UNESCO, the country risks a lost generation as educated women are essential for its development. “Afghanistan – or any other country – cannot advance if half of its population is not allowed to pursue an education and participate in public life.”

Between 2001 and 2018, Afghanistan experienced a tenfold increase in enrollment at all levels of education, from around one million to 10 million students. The number of girls in primary school has increased from almost zero to 2.5 million. As of August 2021, they accounted for four out of 10 primary school students. The presence of women in higher education has also increased nearly 20-fold. 80% of Afghan girls and women of school age today do not attend school. The order to suspend university education for women affects more than 100,000 women.
