Unexplained leaks also in the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline in the Baltic

The gas pipeline Nord Stream 1, which connects the Russia with Germany, has experienced two unexplained gas leaks in the Baltic, Danish and Swedish authorities announced today, the day after the announcement of a leak in the parallel Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Objects of geopolitical bravado, the two pipelines, which operated by a joint venture dependent on the giant Russian company Gazprom, are not operational due to the consequences of war in Ukraine. However both are still full of gas.

“The authorities have now been informed that there have been two more leaks in the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which is also not operational but contains gas,” Danish Climate and Energy Minister Dan Jorgensen said in a statement to AFP.

“It is too early to say anything about the causes of the incidents,” but the senior Danish official announced that the level of vigilance in the electricity and gas sectors in the Nordic country is increasing.

A representative of Sweden’s maritime authorities confirmed to AFP that two leaks were detected off the Danish island of Bornholm, as reported by AFP and relayed by the Athens News Agency.

One of the leaks in Nord Stream 1 occurred in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone, the other in Sweden’s, according to the two countries.

As was the case with the leak found yesterday, Monday, in Nord Stream 2, safety measures were taken.

Navigation within a radius of five nautical miles (about 9 kilometers) and overflight within a radius of one kilometer were prohibited.

“The incidents on the two pipelines have no impact on Danish supplies,” Jorgensen clarified.

Yesterday, Monday evening, the operator of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines had reported a drop in pressure in the first gas pipeline after a leak was detected in the second.
