Unforgettable cinema clothes: Sophia Loren’s Dior in Arabesque

«Arabesque, an exotic word. What does it mean? Arabesque is Gregory Peck. Arabesque is Sophia Loren. Arabesque it is sex and romance, it is intrigue and mystery ». So went the trailer for Stanley Donen’s spy-story released in 1966.

Arabesque it’s fashion, we add, is Sophia Loren’s dream wardrobe, created for the actress by Dior House (Yves Saint Lauren himself took part in the making of the costumes of the film), including the dress in powder pink organza remained in the collective imagination as one of the most desirable dresses seen on the big screen.

We are in Swinging London of the sixties. The pop culture of the era reverberates in a kaleidoscope of images reflected in windows, pupils and rear-view mirrors of cars. On the poster stands the tagline «Ultra-mod! Ultra-mad! Ultra-mystery! ».

Sophia Loren is Yasmine, the mistress of an oil tycoon who helps hieroglyphics specialist Professor David Pollock (Gregory Peck) foil an international conspiracy. Always flawless and sensual in her Dior wardrobe – even during escapes and chases – Yasmine wears spotted overcoats and patent leather cuissardes boots in a perfect mod style, but also gowns, suits and precious evening dresses.

A dress is imposed on everyone and remains imprinted in the collective memory: it is the fluffy dress with flounces designed for the role by Marc Bohan of Dior, but that would be worthy of any contemporary red carpet.

The Italian actress, wrapped in meters of tulle in a very delicate shade of pink, not only expresses all her sensuality and elegance, but sends fashion lovers into raptures, surrounded by a myriad of shoes, while she casually tries on some models and observes herself in a wall of mirrors.
