UNHCR requests that charges be dropped against members of humanitarian organizations on trial in Lesbos

While awaiting the decision of her court Mytilene which judges the case of 24 defendants volunteers who helped refugees and migrants who landed on Greek shores, the UN is intervening in favor of their acquittal, as they are talking about an absurd case. His High Commission UN for Human Rights asked the Greek judiciary to withdraw all charges against members of humanitarian organizations that provide aid to Immigrants and whose trial is currently underway at Lesvosas reported by Agence France-Presse.

“This kind of trial is truly worrying because it criminalises acts that save people’s lives,” said Liz Trossell, a spokeswoman for High Commissions, during a regular press briefing in Geneva. “Saving lives and providing humanitarian aid should never be criminalized. Such actions are simply a humanitarian imperative and Human Rights“, said the representative of the High Commission. She also commented that the High Commissioner expresses fears that the legislation in a number of European countries “will be used to criminalize both migrants and those who help them”.
