In an interview with CNN This Thursday (19), Mônica Dias Pinto, head of Education at Unicef in Brazil, said that the UN body “is concerned” with the bill (PL) that was approved in the Chamber of Deputies on authorization for “homeschooling ”, homeschooling. The bill now goes to the Senate.
This Wednesday (18), the House plenary approved the basic text of the PL that regulates the practice of basic home education. Suggestions for changes to the initial text will be voted on this Thursday.
“The Constitution says that education is a right for all and a duty of the family and the State”, said Mônica, adding that “the school is the place that, in partnership with the community, has the task of educating children for life in society, preparation for the world of work”.
At another point in the interview, the head of Education at Unicef in Brazil, also highlighted that the concern is due because “it is the school institution that has this technical competence, in dialogue with families, for the full, cognitive, emotional development of children and teenager”.
She argued that there are indicators of learning loss – even with activity guidelines by most educational institutions -, problems with mental health, suffering and even domestic violence during the period of the pandemic, in which activities had to be carried out remotely. .
Mônica also said that there was recklessness (imprudence) with the delay for all children to return to face-to-face classes, adding that “we need to ensure that all children, in fact, remain in school”.
During the interview, she also informed that Unicef will publish a technical note “establishing this information that is essential for the population and legislators to reflect responsibly on the moment we live in”.
