The world’s poorest countries last month rejected more than 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccines distributed under the global COVAX program, largely because they were about to expire, a UNICEF official said today.
“More than 100 million vaccines were rejected in December alone,” said Etliva Ladigi, director of the UN’s procurement department, speaking to members of the European Parliament.
As she explained, the main reason for their rejection was that these supplies had a short expiration date.
Poorer countries have also been forced to delay receipts because they do not have adequate storage facilities, including a lack of refrigerators to store vaccines, she said.
