Unifying taxes is a revolution, says tax reform group coordinator

The coordinator of the tax reform working group, federal deputy Reginaldo Lopes (PT-MG), considers that the unification of consumption taxes is “a revolution.”

A CNN Radio he stated that a reform of this importance and nature “has to be carried out in the first quarter.”

The conclusion of the analyzes should happen on May 16th.

For the parliamentarian, the proposal to unify taxes is important because, today, “nobody knows how much they pay for the final product, neither the consumer nor the entrepreneur.”

Reginaldo Lopes considers that the tax reform will be the “greatest legacy of this legislature and this administration by the federal government for the future of the country.”

The deputy believes that it is not possible to separate the taxation of Goods and Services: “We have a tax system of exception, not of rule.”

“More than 150 countries implement this one-time cost, so mayors and governors are also willing to reform.”

He reinforced that “no one supports the tax war anymore” and that, with the reform, “the economy will grow between 15 and 20%, and, with the richer country, it will be possible to reduce the tax burden.”

At the same time, however, he admits that the working group “will have to be competent to seek convergence and resolve disagreements to build an optimal reform.”

Lopes once again defended that taxes should be lower for the poorest population: “We cannot tax exorbitantly those who make the economy grow, those at the bottom of the pyramid, we have to relieve the poorest, to distribute wealth”.
