Unions approve strike that could stop Metro and CPTM next Tuesday (28)

Public employee unions and bodies linked to the government of the state of São Paulo approved a unified strike for next Tuesday (28).

According to the employees, the strike will involve workers from the Metro, CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos), Sabesp (Companhia de Saneamento do Estado), teachers from the public network and Fundação Casa employees.

The stoppage of rail transport does not affect the privatized sections: Lines 4-Yellow and 5-Lilac of the Metro and lines 8-Diamente and 9-Esmeralda on CPTM.

In a joint note signed by union representatives, workers demand greater investment in the areas of education and health and demand that São Paulo’s public services not be privatized.

On October 3rd, employees from Metrô, CPTM and Sabesp carried out a strike against the São Paulo government’s privatization plans. The strike lasted 24 hours and was classified by governor Tarcisío de Freitas (Republicans) as illegal and politically motivated.

CNN contacted the São Paulo government and is awaiting feedback.
