Unisa treats acts of simulated masturbation as “hazing” and asks MEC to archive the investigation

The university of the medical students who appear masturbating in the video informed the Ministry of Education that the episode was a “hazing” between the students and that it was unaware of what had happened until the images were released.

On Monday (18), the MEC notified the university and demanded clarification. The Santo Amaro University, which is located in the interior of São Paulo, sent explanations to the MEC on Tuesday (19).

In the document, the institution classifies the students’ attitude as regrettable, asks for the process to be archived and says that it has already taken what it considers the maximum punishment: expelling the students.

The obscene acts took place during a women’s volleyball tournament, between April and May this year. The videos, however, only went viral last weekend.

The institution states that it did not participate in the organization of the event, that it would be “absolutely divorced from the academic calendar” and that this role would be the responsibility of the Athletics of the Medical Courses. “It was an extramural event, unrelated to UNISA’s institutional activities”, he highlighted.

After the images were released, some students reported that acts like the one recorded in April are common in activities involving freshmen.

The university denies this and says it will combat such situations.

“UNISA adopts daily actions to combat so-called ‘hazing’ and ‘hazing acts’, such as the execrable acts that gave rise to the Office in reference, promoting campaigns and lectures, to raise awareness of the harm caused by them and their demystification as ‘ rite of passage’ or ‘mere fun’”.
