Former Prime Minister and current Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, said on Thursday (7) that he sees “absolutely no argument for unilateral action by Venezuela” in Guyana, after the referendum called by Nicolás Maduro, in which the population approved the annexation of the Essequibo region.
Cameron made the comment during a joint statement with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington.
“These borders were established in 1899. I see absolutely no argument for unilateral action by Venezuela; it must stop, it is a mistake,” he said.
He further stated: “I hope to have some phone calls later with the President of Guyana and others in the region to try to ensure that this very retrograde step that has been taken does not go any further.”
During the meeting, Cameron expressed his satisfaction with the measures taken by the United States, which expressed its support for Guyana’s sovereignty.
In 1899, the Paris arbitration award granted the British, who then ruled Guyana, sovereignty over the controversial oil-rich zone. Decades later, Venezuela reported to the UN that there were defects in the trial and made it clear that it considered the sentence null and void.
In 1966, the Geneva Agreement was signed, in which the United Kingdom admitted the existence of a dispute over the Essequibo territory. That same year, Guyana became independent, beginning a phase of direct negotiations with Venezuela.
On her account on Brexit, for which David Cameron is directly responsible.”
“It is worth remembering that they are also signatories to the Geneva Agreement that they intend to break today,” he added.
Guyana denounced that, with the referendum and the measures put into practice since then, Caracas seeks the “annexation” of the disputed area, a term that has also been used by the International Criminal Court.
