The governments of Germany, France and the United Kingdom asked for an immediate return to ceasefire in Gaza in a joint statement on Friday (21). In the document, the countries also ask Israel to restore humanitarian access in Palestinian territory.
“We ask Israel to restore humanitarian access, including water and electricity, and ensure access to temporary medical care and removal in accordance with the international humanitarian law,” the foreign ministers of the three nations said in a joint statement.
They also asked Hamas Palestinian militants to free the Israeli hostages.
Understand why Israel broke out and resumed the war in Gaza
The Israeli government gave different reasons for the resumption of conflict in Gaza.
The country’s Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, said the attacks were “due to Hamas’ refusal to release hostages and threats to harm IDF soldiers [Forças de Defesa de Israel] and the Israeli communities. ”If this sounds like the same reason Israel has attacked Gaza since October 7, 2023, it is because it is. Israel’s war goals in Gaza are to return the remaining hostages taken by Hamas and destroy the group’s government and military capabilities.
The spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Israel, in turn, said the attacks occurred because “Hamas rejected two concrete mediation proposals presented by the US envoy Steve Witkoff.”
An Israeli authority also stated that Israel’s air strikes in Gaza on Tuesday (18) are the first phase of a series of climbing military actions to press Hamas to release more hostages, marking a return to the vision of Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that military pressure is the most effective way to ensure hostage release.
Israeli internal policy is also a great factor.
The far right in Israel has always opposed ceasing fire in Gaza, seeing him as a surrender to Hamas. They want all Palestinians to leave Gaza and to restore the settlements taken in 2005.
Netanyahu needs this coalition to rule.
A far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir left the government in protest against ceasefire, but decided to return earlier this week. Another, Bezalel Smotrich, said he would leave if Israel would not return to war. This would have destroyed the government of Netanyahu.
