The United Kingdom Armed Forces launched air strikes against Houthis in Yemen in a joint operation with the United States, the British Ministry of Defense said.
According to the statement issued on Wednesday (30), the offensive took place on Tuesday (29). This is also the first public announcement of a joint operation since the Trump government has intensified the military campaign against the Yemeni rebels.
The attacks targeted “a set of buildings” south of the capital Sanaa, used by Houthis to manufacture drones, which the group uses to attack ships at sea, according to the ministry.
The Royal Air Force sent Typhoon fighters to reach these buildings, launching precision pumps after dusk, after “very careful planning… to allow targets to be reached at least risk for civilians or non -military infrastructure,” he said.
All aircraft returned safely, the military added.
Understand the offensive against the hethis
The Houthis, a rebel group supported by Iran, began a military campaign in solidarity with the Palestinians after Israel into war with Hamas in October 2023.
They attacked US Navy ships and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden – two crucial waterways for international sea routes – and fired missiles against Israel.
In response, the United States launched attacks on Houthis weapons and destroyed sea drones and submarines.
The United Kingdom has already participated in joint attacks on the US against the Yemeni group, including numerous operations by 2024.
Still, Wednesday’s statement marks the first recognition of a joint attack since President Donald Trump resumed the military offensive against the rebels.
Tuesday’s joint operation “is in line with the UK government’s longstanding policy after the Houthis began their attack campaign in November 2023, threatening the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, reaching international ships and killing innocent merchants,” said the ministry statement.
John Healey, UK Secretary of Defense, said the offensive aims to prevent new Hethis attacks, adding that a 55% drop in Red Sea navigation caused regional instability and damaged the UK economy.
