UK retail sales rebounded in April, beating analysts’ estimates as spending on alcohol, fuel and e-shops rose, the ONS statistics office said.
Retail sales volumes rose 1.4% in the previous month compared to March, while economists expected retail sales to decline by 0.3%.
Compared to April 2021, retail sales fell 4.9%. However, sales for April were 4.1% higher than pre-pandemic levels in February 2020.
Sales in grocery stores were among the strongest, up 2.8%, largely due to spending on alcohol and tobacco.
Out-of-store sales also rose after falling in March, up 3.7% in April, mainly from clothing sales.
Car fuel sales were also strong, rising 1.4% after falling sharply last month.
