United Nations ‘Concern’ for ‘Scaling’ in the Red Sea after Houthi attacks on ships

The UN envoy on Yemen today expressed his concern about “escalating” in the Red Sea after two attacks launched by Houthi rebels over the last two days against merchant ships – both Greek interests – off the coast of Yemen, the first attacks. “We are now observing with great concern the escalation in the Red Sea by attacks on two merchant ships earlier this week by Ansar Allah (the official name of Houthi)”, “the first attacks on merchant ships for more than seven months,” Hans Grunberg told a Council meeting. Houthi took responsibility for Sunday’s attack on the Magic Seas cargo ship – Greek interests, also under the Liberian flag – which sank but the crew of which was rescued, as well as for Monday’s Monday’s attack on MV Eternity C, at least under Liberian flag.
