For the first time since the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the United States has stated that it will recognize a Syrian government, but to do so it will need to comply with some key principles to obtain this support.
According to the White House, the new Syrian organization will need to commit to fully respecting the rights of minorities and facilitating the flow of humanitarian aid. The US calls on the Syrian leadership to prevent the country from becoming a “base for terrorism” and ensure that chemical weapons are destroyed safely.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on all countries to support an inclusive and transparent process in creating the new government. The United States also highlighted that it expects a transition without external interference.
Also on Wednesday, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, accused Israel, Turkey and the White House of influencing the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The Iranian government was a strong supporter of the deposed president’s regime.
Rebel leader Mohammed al-Jolani, in turn, said that foreign countries need not fear another war in the country. The statements come as the Islamic rebel group HTS begins to consolidate its power in Syria.
According to al-Jolani, Syria is not ready for a conflict, highlighting that the focus now is on reconstruction. The country’s interim prime minister, al-Bashir, also reinforced the focus on restoring cities and states affected by the civil war.
However, he highlighted that there are no resources for this rapid reconstruction of Syria because the Assad regime left the coffers empty.
