A little air of déjà vu. Mike Pence, Vice President of the United States, proudly announced Friday, December 18, the new name of the American space forces. Members of this unit will henceforth be known as “the Guardians”. Internet users, however, quickly saw a reference to films. Guardians of the Galaxy or the saga Star Trek. And not just in the name. The logo and the visual published during the announcement clearly make one think of these universes. On Twitter, the wink (voluntary or not) made Internet users laugh a lot.
Mockery and “memes” (image hijackings) were quick to flourish on Twitter, with some pointing out that the name “guardians” was already taken … by Peter Quill and his gang of Guardians of the Galaxy, characters movies from the Marvel universe. One internet user also noticed that the arrow-shaped logo, with a sort of star in the middle, strangely resembled the badge of Star Trek appearing on Starfleet uniforms.
Many people responded with gifs showing annoyed characters. The director of the first two installments of the film franchise Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn, also expressed his astonishment at this choice. And the official account of the franchise has cracked a small discreet message adorned with a rocket: “Who, us?”, Can we read in the blink of an eye
The United States has 16,000 “guardians” of space
“Guardians: a name chosen by space professionals for space professionals”, can we read at the head of the visual posted on the official Twitter account of the American space forces, created a year ago in the goal of protecting and defending American interests in space. The USSF, for “United States Space Force”, now has 16,000 members, and therefore as many “guardians”.
People making jokes about the new #Guardians name for the United States space force. I’ve seen guardians of the galaxy but does nobody think of destiny’s guardians? XD
