United States: the disappearance of the mysterious monolith elucidated?

Part of the mystery surrounding a metal obelisk that vanished into a desert of Utah in the United States has apparently been unraveled. Its origin is still unknown. But his disappearance has been elucidated if we are to believe images broadcast on the internet, on which we can see four men busying themselves at night to dismantle this strange monolith.

Photographer Ross Bernards, who was on site on Friday evening, described on Instagram the scene he witnessed, with pictures in support: four men appearing, bringing down the metal prism of more than 3.5 m top and take it apart before taking it in a wheelbarrow to an unknown destination. “One of them turned to us and said ‘don’t leave a trace’. It was at 8:48 pm, ”he writes.

Discovered mid-November

After the photographer’s post, a tightrope walker and extreme sports enthusiast named Andy Lewis, 34, uploaded a video on YouTube titled “We Took Down the Utah Monolith.” The video shows images similar to the photos and story provided by Ross Bernards, with the obelisk being evacuated in a wheelbarrow, but does not provide further explanation.

The polished metal object was discovered in mid-November on the red soil of the Utah desert by astonished local officials who flew over the area to identify the bighorn sheep. After landing their helicopter to investigate, these Utah Department of Public Safety employees discovered a “metal monolith stuck in the ground,” but were unable to find “any clear indication of who might have placed the monolith ”.

News of the discovery quickly went viral on the internet, with many noting similarities to the bizarre alien monoliths greatly accelerating humanity’s progress in the sci-fi classic “2001: A Space Odyssey,” a film by Stanley Kubrick and a novel by Arthur C. Clarke. Some observers have noted a resemblance to the avant-garde works of John McCracken, an American sculptor who lived for a time in the neighboring state of New Mexico and died in 2011. No formal link has however been established between the famous monolith. and the sculptor.

Authorities had refused to reveal the location of the monolith so as not to attract hordes of curious people, but a race quickly began online to determine its location based on the geological formations in the area. Some quickly managed to locate the site, where dozens of people had visited, endangering a natural site and leaving behind a lot of waste, according to the authorities. The disappearance of the object had been noted Saturday by various onlookers and the Utah land use planning office, which manages the area, had denied having taken any part in the removal of this structure, considered by this service as “private property”.
