Brian Thompson was walking toward the New York Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, dressed in a suit and tie, to attend a UnitedHealthcare conference being held in the ballroom.
A shooter, who, according to witnesses, was waiting for Thompson’s arrival, opened fire several times from just over six meters away, hitting the victim. The 50-year-old man was shot in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to New York police.
The circumstances are not immediately clear, but investigators say it appears to be a targeted attack. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, the NYPD said.
THE CNN contacted UnitedHealthcare looking for a position. Thompson was named chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. The company is part of UnitedHealth Group, ranked fifth on the Fortune 500 list, according to the company itself.
