The Civil Police of Minas Gerais is investigating a possible embezzlement of more than R$515,000 by a student at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (Ufop), in Minas Gerais. Ygor Fernandes Araújo is accused of using the money of the republic, in which he resided and held the position of treasurer, in online betting.
The association that manages República Partenon says that the student had access to the institution’s bank accounts due to the role he held and that the other residents of the house learned about the financial gap after being contacted by Ygor’s lawyer earlier this month.
Still according to a note published on the republic’s profile on social networks, they were in the process of acquiring a new house and paying off a debt of around R$ 70,000, resulting from parties promoted during Carnival. Students launched a virtual crowdfunding to raise money and settle the amount owed.
Victims and witnesses of the case are already being heard by the civil police in Ouro Preto. The investigation into the alleged embezzlement is being carried out under confidentiality.
Ygor Araújo’s defense informed the CNN that your client is available to the authorities to collaborate with the investigation. Still according to the lawyer Gabriel de Faria, the student’s parents recently learned of financial inconsistencies in the republic’s administration and offered to investigate what happened along with the other students.
The investigated, according to his lawyer, left the republic and is living at his parents’ house, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, because of a medical treatment he has been undergoing.
