The US Capitol building is blocked after a car crashed into the fence surrounding the complex. The suspect and two police officers were taken to hospital, police said, according to the BBC.
The Capitol and adjacent streets in Washington are blocked. The police warned of an “external security threat”.
Now the US Congress is not in session, most of the legislators are outside the Capitol. President Joe Biden left Washington earlier that day.
The Capitol Police Alert System sent out an email to lawmakers and their staff urging them to stay away from outside windows and doors. All outside were ordered to seek shelter.
CNN writes that at least one of the police officers was stabbed. The driver was opened fire, he was taken to the hospital. NBC writes that he passed away.

The District of Columbia National Guard dispatched an Immediate Response Force to the Capitol today.
The incident took place almost three months after the bloody riots at the Capitol on January 6.
