Unmanned ships are already collecting garbage in the rivers of Vietnam: each costs 500 thousand dollars

In the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, special unmanned electric vessels Interceptor of the non-profit company Ocean Cleanup appeared, which will clean water from various debris, the Nikkei Asian news outlet reported, citing its sources. The specialists who created the corresponding unmanned ship said that their development is capable of capturing plastic bottles, food packaging, and other plastic debris from the water – thanks to this, non-degradable waste does not enter the world’s oceans. Moreover, the collected plastic is planned to be recycled in order to be reused in production.

Inside the Interceptor ship is a full-fledged conveyor, which, after collecting plastic debris, automatically distributes it among six internal waste storage tanks. Electronic systems ensure that the weight of the collected debris is evenly distributed between the compartments – this is important for the safe movement of the vehicle. In addition, the unmanned Interceptor ship is equipped with a solar battery to recharge the built-in batteries – due to this, the ship is environmentally friendly. The only problem is that due to the high level of manufacturability of the equipment, the cost of one such “hunter” for plastic is 500 thousand dollars.

In addition, representatives of Ocean Cleanup said that their unmanned ships that collect plastic debris from rivers are only a temporary solution to combat pollution of the world’s oceans. These vessels are indeed capable of reducing the level of ocean pollution, but experts plan to engage in this project only until some more efficient way of collecting garbage is developed. Yet a single river delta in a single region in Asia is just a drop in the vast ocean of plastic waste around the world.
