The American company Argo AI, which develops autonomous driving technologies with the support of Ford and the Volkswagen Group, has taken another very important step towards fully self-driving cars. The company has released prototypes of its drones on public roads in two US cities – Austin and Miami. They will run without drivers in the cabin along with other road users.
In Miami, Argo AI vehicles are already operating in the Lyft fleet, specifically in the Miami Beach area. The company is also preparing launches in other cities (Washington, Pittsburgh, Palo Alto and Detroit) and is already testing prototypes in Munich and Hamburg. This global reach will help the Argo AI autonomous driving system learn from different road infrastructures and changing driving styles, the company said. This will allow you to deploy the system in many regions and even in different countries.
Argo AI is developing a fully autonomous driving system that includes both software and hardware. The main advantage of the company’s development is a lidar system capable of accurately detecting and identifying objects at a distance of up to 400 meters, which is almost 100 meters more than competitors. The system has a level 4 autonomy on the SAE scale, that is, such cars can move completely independently without human intervention, but only under certain conditions and with well-read markings. Level 5 is considered the highest, which provides for full automation in any conditions.
Argo AI uses Ford Escape crossovers and Volkswagen ID.Buzz vans for its prototypes. Ford is preparing to offer commercial services using the Argo AI system as early as this year, while the VW Group plans to launch a fully self-driving taxi in 2025.
