Unprecedented research shows racial inequality in the technology market

The unprecedented research Potências Negras Tec, carried out in October by the community Potências Negras and Shopper Experience, points out obstacles faced by black people in the job market, especially in the technology sector.

The study had the participation of 1427 people, 69% black and 21% brown. Among them, 83% say they have already suffered discrimination in the corporate environment, 39% by co-workers; 35% by HR professionals and 34% by bosses.

“Research is important to exclusively address the reality of black people who work or want to work in technology. Today, the available research does not map the reality of black people in this market that is dominated by white people, mostly straight and cisgender men, without disabilities and under 30.” emphasizes Sônia Lesse, managing partner at Profissas – Diversity School.

According to BRASSCOM – Brazilian Association of Information and Communication Technology Companies, the technology market in Brazil will demand 797 thousand professionals by 2025. However, in the country only 53 thousand people are trained per year in courses aimed at technological areas. Also according to BRASSCOM, the average annual demand for Information and Communication Technology professionals is 159 thousand.

“For us to discuss and expand the access of black people to technology, data is essential, as it makes it possible to understand the profile, needs, challenges and, then, create paths and opportunities to expand access to development and the job market.”, he adds. Read.

The search for a more inclusive and less exclusive market

The Black Tech Powers survey opens up another dilemma in the technology sectors: 56% of respondents said they hold operational positions or assistant/technician positions and 29% are unemployed. The data also show that the number of black people with a formal contract dropped from 51% to 45% and unemployment increased from 20% to 29%.

For Ana Minuto, specialist in Diversity and Inclusion, plurality is not being unique and corporate spaces need to be more diverse. “As I always say, diversity and inclusion is prosperity! More creative, more innovative environments and an environment that, at least, reflects the country’s demographics. After all, diverse and inclusive places are more innovative, more creative, with more engaged people who feel that they belong to the environment. And how to create it? First, it is important that we are aware that we are not inclusive.” analyze.

Another important piece of data is that 80% of respondents believe that technology areas can drive professional growth. However, the average income of black people who work in some area of technology corresponds to 66% of the income of white people. The information points out that the absence of diversity is the third biggest challenge that black people face in order to enter the market.

For Ana, who has been working in technology for over 15 years, diversity and inclusion need to be daily guidelines inside and outside organizations. “Companies need to review their culture, their policies, their rules, especially their whistleblowing policies. So that you can understand what is actually happening within the company.” concludes.
