Unpredictable Hungary, Viktor Orban’s country, takes EU reins and pledges ‘impartiality’

The unpredictable Hungary, the country of Viktor Orbán, takes over from today, Monday 1/7 and for the next six months the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU and has pledged, to calm the concerns of Brussels, to act with “impartiality”. Anti-democratic diversions and ties to the Kremlin, despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine: the Hungarian presidency is viewed uneasily by the European Parliament and many member states. In Budapest, the government is seeking to reassure the worried, saying it is ready to take on “the obligations and responsibilities” of its mission, which runs until December. “We will act as an impartial mediator, with full loyalty to all member states,” Hungarian European Affairs Minister János Bóka pointed out in mid-June, presenting his country’s program. “At the same time, Hungary will take advantage of the spotlight to put forward ‘its vision for Europe,'” he noted.
