UN’s deputy commander of peace mission is injured after attack on Lebanon

The Deputy Commander of the United Nations Interim Force (UniFil) in Lebanon, who is about to leave office, was injured on Friday (14) after a train that was carrying peacekeepers to peace to Beirut Airport, Capital of the country, being “violently attacked,” said Unifil.

The mission has requested a complete and immediate investigation to Lebanese authorities, and that all culprits for the act are tried, the agency said in a statement.

Lebanon President Joseph Aoun ordered the attack on Saturday, stating that security forces would not tolerate people who try to destabilize the country, a statement issued by the office said.

The French government also condemned the act.

“France asks the Lebanese security authorities to ensure the safety of peacekeeping troops with the blue helmet, and asks Lebanon’s judicial authorities to play light on this unacceptable attack and go after those responsible,” he said on Saturday, too Through a statement, the French Foreign Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lebanon’s Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar called on an emergency meeting before Saturday noon to discuss the issue of security, state news agency NNA said.

“He highlighted the rejection of the Lebanese government to this attack, which is considered a crime against the forces of Unifil,” said NNA, citing the minister.

He also gave instructions to work on identifying the authors and forwarding them to the competent judicial authorities.

The minister told reporters on Saturday that more than 25 people were arrested for investigation into the attack.
