Excessive concentration of sensitive data, even if not malicious, can be as detrimental to their active theft. The Cybernews research team has identified dozens of huge databases containing billions of connection. From social networks and corporate platforms to VPN and programming portals, they left nothing unexplored. The team has been closely monitoring the internet since the beginning of the year and has so far identified 30 exposed sets of data, containing tens of millions to over 3.5 billion recordings each. Overall, the researchers discovered more than 16 billion records. Most of these sets had not been mentioned before, except for one, as at the end of May, Wired magazine reported the discovery of a “mysterious database researcher” with 184 million records, but it is only a small peak in the list of team findings.
