Until the end of 2021, it will be very difficult in Russia to purchase an inexpensive laptop under 40,000 rubles. Equipment manufacturers do not have time to meet consumer demand: due to a shortage of necessary components, companies produce less than 60% of the required number of devices. Such indicators can radically change the situation on the international market. This was reported on the RBC news portal.
Irina Kukina, director of business development for Lenovo personal systems in Russia, confirmed the information provided by RBC. She said that due to the chaos in the market, some networks order much more laptops than they can sell, and from several suppliers at once. Thus, demand exceeds consumption, which can lead to a significant increase in the cost of devices.
Irina Kukina named several reasons for the lack of the necessary parts for the production of cheap laptops. First, this is Intel’s difficult transition from 14nm chips to 10nm chips. Secondly, it is a pandemic that has transferred most of life to virtual mode. Without laptops, it was impossible to survive during the quarantine restrictions, which is why demand for them began to grow. The manufacturers could not meet all the needs as the factories in China were also under insulation. In August 2020, the companies returned to production, but it was physically impossible to create the required number of devices in such a short time.
Dmitry Kravchenko, CEO of Acer in Russia, also noted that the number of cheap laptops dropped exactly at the time of the 2020 lockdown. The head of the company noted that the demand for budget models increased sharply last year. It is not surprising, because earlier one device was enough for one family. And in the conditions of remote life, a laptop is essential for every family member. According to Dmitry Kravchenko, manufacturers were not ready for such a stir. On the contrary, the companies expected a lull in sales, as they thought that the Russians would save on technology.
At the moment, there is no exact information about when the country will fill the shortage of cheap laptops. Presumably, this could be in the second half of 2021 or at the beginning of 2022. The main components for the production of computers are sorely lacking. And, as you know, the absence of even the smallest cable can cause the shutdown of an entire factory. According to the vendor forecast, key laptop parts will be in short supply until at least the third quarter of 2021.
RBC said that this situation has negative consequences for Russians. First, the pricing policy for devices will increase. Secondly, customers will have to revise the project launch dates and change the technical specifications. And this entails additional financial costs. Thirdly, the current situation may lead to a redistribution of shares in the international market.
