‘Unusually high’ radiation at Chernobyl – Russians ‘expecting to get sick from radiation’

Petro Kotin, head of Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear power company Energoatom, visited one of the sections of the so-called Red Forest in the Chernobyl zone with experts and observed “unusually high” radiation in areas where Russian troops were trying to clear fortifications.

In a statement to the Telegram, Energoatom said, “unusually high levels of radiation were recorded” in the area.

External radiation readings were 10-15 times higher than normal and the potential internal radiation received from contact with the ground surface could be 160 times higher than normal, he added.

“Another factor of internal radiation is the Alpha pollution that formed as a result of fragments of radioactive nuclear fuel, graphite bricks that were scattered in this part of the Red Forest” after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, “said Energoatom. at a depth of 40-80 cm, while the conquerors dug deeper. When in the human body, this type of radiation has the effect of converting it to tens and hundreds of times more powerful than gamma and beta radiation.

“Thus, all the occupiers who were in the Red Forest and created and used trenches in the Red Forest, for almost 30 days, would have to wait for radioactivity of varying degrees of severity,” he added.

In a separate statement, Energoatom said Russian troops occupying the Chernobyl plant “looted and also destroyed the offices and laboratory of the Nuclear Safety Institute. They removed computers, office equipment, smashed and destroyed equipment and garages with vehicles used to transport scientists to research sites “.
