The researchers of the Censored Planet project, led by a professor from the University of Michigan, decided to find out how much Roskomnadzor slows down the work of the popular microblogging service Twitter in Russia. And the results of the study showed that since the blocking of Telegram, the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media has new technical opportunities to put pressure on services that do not comply with Russian laws.
In the course of the study, the results of which are published on the project’s website, the authors found that the slowdown of Twitter by Rostelecom is limited not only to photos and videos. The regulator also slows down the technical domain of the social network abs.twimg.com with the files necessary for work. And the statements of Roskomnadzor that they do not slow down text messages, researchers call another deceit.
It is noted that about 30% of users have experienced a noticeable slowdown in access to Twitter. The study found that the bandwidth dropped to 100-150 kbps. Moreover, it is impossible to bypass the restrictions established by Roskomnadzor even using a proxy server if it transmits information in unencrypted form.
We will remind, Roskomnadzor announced the slowdown of Twitter in Russia on March 10. The regulator took such a step due to the fact that the social network did not respond to legal requirements to remove prohibited content. Moreover, Roskomnadzor threatened to completely block Twitter. But a few days ago it became known that the social network began to comply with the requirements of the department and began to remove prohibited content more quickly, in connection with which Roskomnadzor extended the deadline for slowing down Twitter, thereby postponing its blocking until May 15.
