Up to 60 million tonnes of grain could be held up in Ukraine until autumn, says Zelensky

Up to 60 million tonnes of grain could be held up in Ukraine until autumn, which begins in September in the Northern Hemisphere, if the country continues to face export lockdowns. The warning was made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reporters in Kiev on Monday (4).

“You know, 22 million tons are held up now,” Zelensky said. “We also expect around 60 million tonnes in the fall. Then we will be in a very difficult situation, very difficult.”

The president also said he was working with the United Nations (UN) to try to open a safe corridor that would allow Ukraine to export grain from its Black Sea ports.

“We are interested in this as exporters. We are interested in this, so that our farmers will continue to work for next year, for the next harvest. To do that, we need to export all these grains – barley, wheat, corn, etc,” Zelensky said.

“From our side, the Ukrainian state is not wasting time and we are working on various railways and river ports for the export of our grain, and we are increasing this export every day.”
