Up to 80% of TikTok songs can be removed; understand

The problems between TikTok and musical copyrights began to reach several record companies. Now, songs written by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) songwriters will also be removed.

As of Tuesday (27), songs by artists such as Bad Bunny, Harry Styles, Adele and SZA may no longer appear in searches and the videos that used them will be left behind. silent . The action could affect up to 4 million works.

TikTok says up to 30% of what it calls “popular songs” could be lost, while other industry estimates say up to 80% of all music on the platform could be muted.

This happens because each song has two copyrights: one for the recording of the song (from record companies) and another for the lyrics and composition of a song (from music publishers).

Songwriters can write songs for artists on multiple labels, so songs from Sony or Warner, for example, could be subject to removal if a UMPG songwriter wrote them.

At the beginning of February, songs from the UMG record label's catalog were removed from the platform after a lack of agreement between the companies. In an open letter, UMG stated that Tiktok had been “trying to create a business based on music, without paying fair value for music”.

In response, the platform sent a statement to Billboard, saying that “TikTok has entered into agreements that put artists first with all other record labels and distributors. Clearly, Universal’s self-serving actions are not in the best interests of artists, songwriters and fans.”
