Updated Wi-Fi 6 standard promises faster and more reliable Wi-Fi performance

The Wi-Fi Alliance has announced Wi-Fi 6 Release 2, an update to the Wi-Fi 6 standard that includes several improvements, including higher upstream bandwidth, improved energy efficiency, and more.

One of the key changes in Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 is the higher upstream bandwidth. In particular, there is support for MU-MIMO (multi-user technology), which allows multiple devices to simultaneously download content to an access point. This feature provides faster download speeds and lower latency during gaming sessions and video conferencing. In addition, this version also adds new high-speed channels in the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6E, providing faster and more reliable Wi-Fi performance.

Another change is power management. Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 includes several power and sleep improvements such as Preset Wake Time for Broadcast (TWT), increased latency, and Dynamic Multi-User Spatial Multiplexing Power Saving (SMPS). All of these improvements will allow devices on Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 networks to receive extended sleep times, preset wake times for data transfers, and dynamically turn off excess resources to improve energy efficiency.

New features introduced in Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 will work in all three bands – 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz. Manufacturers such as Broadcom, Intel, Qualcomm, NXP and onsemi have already announced support for the new version of the standard. The first Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 devices are expected to arrive in the first half of 2022.
