Uproar over offensive term used by Pope Francis for homosexuals

There has been an uproar in Italy over a comment Pope Francis allegedly made during a meeting in Rome. The 87-year-old pontiff reportedly used a derogatory comment about homosexuals in a closed-door meeting with Italian bishops. In particular, Pope Francis is reported to have said that there is already a sufficient presence of homosexuals in the church and that “there is no need for others”. But he used a vulgar Italian term to describe them. Italian newspapers report that Pope Francis has said that seminaries are already too full of “frociaggine”, which literally translates as “sister”. So far from the Vatican there is no official position on whether Pope Francis used the specific term. The pope reiterated the position that homosexuals should not be admitted to the priesthood, arguing that while it is important for the Church to open its arms to all, it is possible for a gay person to lead a double life.
