British police announced Tuesday that they are investigating after a package containing uranium was found and seized at the airport. Heathrow of London.
The discovery of the material was made on December 29, during a routine check by members of the Border Guard, police said.
According to a report by the British tabloid The Sun, which was the first to report on the seizure, the package came from Pakistan and arrived in England on a plane that took off from Oman.
The uranium was in a cargo of scrap ore and police investigating the case are looking into the possibility of “mishandling” of the – potentially deadly – material in Pakistan, the BBC reported.
“I want to reassure the public: the amount of radioactive material was extremely small” and experts “concluded that there is no danger” to the British, police chief Richard Smith told the press.
“Although our investigation is ongoing, the package does not appear to be linked to any direct threat,” he added, as reported by Agence France-Presse and relayed by the Athens News Agency.
