European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said late on Thursday that the prisoner swap between Russia and Western countries was “a moment of great joy”. “I welcome the release of innocent EU and US citizens and whole Russian democrats held captive in Russia,” Ms von der Leyen said via X. “The Kremlin exchanged them for convicted criminals and murderers. This shows the absolute difference. This is a moment of great joy for those who fought for their freedom,” added the German politician. Russia and Belarus and Western nations exchanged at Ankara airport—facilitated by the Turkish spy agency (MİT)—a total of 26 prisoners with alleged espionage figures and a man serving a prison sentence in Germany for the murder of a Chechen exile in center of Berlin in 2019. source: APE
