Ursula von der Leyen: We must save time, reduce the spread of Omicron

LAST UPDATE 8:30

The pressure on health systems in Europe is partly linked to the large number of unvaccinated patients, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today during a press conference after the summit.

He also noted that he had informed the leaders that “the contracts (for the supply of vaccines) stipulate that the companies will develop custom vaccines if requested, within 100 days”.

“As we continue to struggle with the Delta variant, Omicron is threatening us,” said von der Leyen, noting that the new variant of the virus, which has mutations that are of concern to scientists, is spreading at a dangerously fast rate.

As Ursula von der Leyen also pointed out, the Commission intends to present a delegated act. “We will guarantee that there will be a common approach regarding the booster installments and the validity period of the certificate,” he explained. “The booster doses are recommended (to be administered) no later than six months after full vaccination and the vaccination certificate will remain valid beyond that for a grace period of three months,” Ursula von der Leyen explained.

Asked about the debate on additional measures being taken by Member States to prevent the spread of Omicron, European Council President Charles Michel said that this variant of the new coronavirus raises a new challenge for everyone.

He added that due to the new mutation and the importance of encouraging the third installment “we must take into account this certificate (…) and the importance of cooperation as much as possible”.

“It is the responsibility of the Member States to take additional measures, in addition to the certificate (…), but there is a common will to coordinate, to cooperate,” added Charles Michel, recalling that decisions and measures must be based on scientific evidence.

For her part, the President of the European Commission pointed out that the main thing that is known as this stage is the highest transmissibility of Omicron.

“What we need to do now is to save time, to reduce the spread of Omicron as much as possible. The means are the triple vaccination, of course the masks, the distances, the reduction of contacts”, he pointed out and assured that there is enough vaccines and preparations are underway for their possible adaptation.
