Uruguay: center-left candidate says Mercosur needs dynamism

The leading candidate in the second round of Uruguay’s presidential elections, YamandĂș Orsi, addressed undecided voters this Sunday (24) after voting, asking them to maintain hope in politics, as polls suggest that this group of voters could be crucial in a tight race.

Orsi voted in his hometown of Canelones, the second largest city in Uruguay, where he was mayor from 2015 to 2024. During a press conference outside the polling place, he said he has no “plan B” except to run for president .

The former history teacher also made reference to the Mercosur trade bloc, formed by Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, expressing his objective of seeking a “complex balance”.

Uruguay’s current president, Luis Lacalle Pou, has fueled tensions with other Mercosur members with his plans for trade deals outside the bloc, including with China. Critics of Mercosur say it prevents Uruguay from increasing its exports of products such as beef and soy.

Lacalle Pou remains popular, but Uruguay’s constitution does not allow leaders to run for immediate re-election.
