The candidate of Uruguay’s ruling party, Álvaro Delgado, said he would not invite the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, to his inauguration if he won the second round of this Sunday’s presidential elections (24).
Delgado spoke to the media outside the polling place in Montevideo where he voted, saying he spoke with Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
Delgado declared that Venezuela’s July 28 presidential vote was fraudulent, contradicting Venezuelan election officials and the high court over Maduro’s victory. The opposition claims that the numbers collected by its observers demonstrate a clear victory for González.
Voting in the small nation of 3.4 million sees center-left opposition candidate Yamandú Orsi facing Delgado, who received the support of the third-place finisher.
Opinion polls suggest that this Sunday’s second round promises to be extremely tight, with less than 25,000 votes potentially separating the leaders.
