Voting in the second round of Uruguay’s presidential election ended at 7:30 pm, Brasília time, this Sunday (24). Vote counting has already begun, and the first results should be released in the next few hours.
Yamandú Orsi, a center-left candidate, and Álvaro Delgado, a center-right candidate, are competing for the position. Although the latest polls before the vote favored Orsi, the second round is expected to be a tight contest.
The presidential candidate of Uruguay’s ruling party, Álvaro Delgado, ended his campaign on Wednesday (20) in the capital. The former secretary of the Presidency under the government of Luis Lacalle Pou aims to guarantee the continuity of the National Party.
Yamandú Orsi, a candidate supported by José “Pepe” Mujica, is trying to unseat the ruling conservative bloc.
The 57-year-old former history teacher and mayor sought to reassure voters that he does not plan a sudden political change in the traditionally moderate and relatively wealthy nation known for its beaches, legal cannabis and stable economy.
Candidates registered their votes in the second round of the presidential elections this Sunday.
Orsi voted at around 10:30 am in his hometown of Canelones, the second most populous in the country, where he was mayor from 2015 to 2024, surrounded by family and supporters.
Delgado, who has the support of the candidate who came in third place in the first round, voted in the capital Montevideo at around 12:30 pm.
