US: 61-year-old accused of illegal agent of Russia – Who is Elena Branson who faces 6 crimes

For illegal action as an unregistered agent of the Russian government in the US A woman with American and Russian citizenship is accused, as announced on Tuesday (9/3), federal prosecutors in New York.

This is Elena Branson, 61 years old, who has American and Russian citizenship and is responsible for a public influence campaign in favor of Russia, APE-MPE reports. The woman is accused by prosecutors for six offenses as he was not officially registered with the US government as a foreign government agent and was involved in a visa fraud conspiracy. She left the US for Russia in 2020 and remains unarrested, prosecutors said.

Branson’s indictment goes hand in hand with US moves to put pressure on Russia imposing financial sanctions due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“In the light of current global events in particular, the need to detect and thwart attempts to exert foreign influence is crucial,” Manhattan Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement.

He is accused of receiving thousands of dollars in funding from the Russian government to promote Russian culture.

No contact was made with Branson to comment on the developments. Prosecutors allege that Branson received tens of thousands of dollars in funding from the Russian government to run an organization known as the Russian Center in New York, which organized the “I Love Russia” public influence campaign in the United States, promoting Russian history and culture to U.S. youth.

The same organization exercised public influence over officials in the state of Hawaii in order not to change the name of a former Russian fortress on the island of Kauai, while it also organized a visit of officials from Hawaii to Moscow to meet with their Russian counterparts, prosecutors said.
