US: $ 800 million extra military aid to Ukraine announced by Biden

US President Joe Biden is expected to announce today $ 800 million in aid to Ukraine to bolster its security forces following the Russian invasion, a White House official has said.

He is expected to make this announcement after the intervention via video link of the Ukrainian counterpart of Volodymyr Zelensky in the US Congress. With the extra amount, US aid “announced over the past week will reach $ 1 billion,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

In total, “the president has approved ($ 2 billion) in security assistance since the government took office, and ‘the United States remains by far the largest donor of security assistance to Ukraine,'” he added.

According to his official program, Mr. Biden will talk about “US aid to Ukraine at 11:45 (local time; 17:45 Greek time).

Mr. Zelensky will address (at 15:00 Greek time) to members of the US Congress, several of whom are pushing the US President to toughen his stance against Russia.

The Ukrainian president had already exchanged views with more than 100 US elected officials via video conference on March 5, when he called for tougher financial sanctions in Moscow.

On Tuesday, President Biden signed a bill that would provide a total of $ 13.6 billion in spending by Washington “to counter Russia’s invasion of Ukraine” and “impact on neighboring countries.”

According to the White House official, Washington had already supplied Ukraine with 2,600 Javelin anti-aircraft missiles and more than 600 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles last year.

For his part, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the United States would provide $ 186 million in humanitarian aid to refugees fleeing Ukraine to escape the war. The amount is added to the $ 293 million already offered, according to the head of US diplomacy.
