The United States Department of State released a report accusing the Chinese government of expanding disinformation efforts. China countered by saying that this information is “disinformation itself”, the Beijing Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday (30).
The ministry reacted after the US department released a stunning report this week in which it accused the Chinese government of expanding efforts to control information and disseminating propaganda and disinformation that promote “digital authoritarianism” in China and around the world.
The US report, released on Thursday (28) by the Center for Global Engagement, alleged that China spends billions of dollars a year on manipulating foreign information and warned that Chinese leader Xi Jinping had “significantly expanded” efforts to “shape the global information environment”.
It also highlighted US concerns about China as its main military competitor and main rival in the battle for ideas and global disinformation.
Two days later, China reacted.
“The relevant US State Department center that produced the report is engaged in propaganda and infiltration in the name of ‘global engagement’ — it is a source of disinformation and the command center of the ‘war of perception’,” the ministry said in the Saturday.
Referring to the wars in Iraq and Syria, as well as US reports alleging human rights abuses in Xinjiang, China, as examples, the ministry stated that the US is “an ’empire of lies’ through and through”.
“No matter how much the US tries to attach the disinformation label to other countries, more and more people around the world have caught wind of the US’s ugly attempt to perpetuate its supremacy by weaving lies in the ’emperor’s new clothes’ and defaming others.” , completed the Chinese ministry.
