A Minnesota court has found former police officer Kimberly Potter guilty of manslaughter for shooting and killing an African-American car driver for confusing her service revolver with a laser gun.
The 12 jurors found Potter guilty of killing 20-year-old Dode Wright, who was shot in the chest in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis, on April 11.
Wright’s death sparked a series of protests in the neighborhood. It coincided with the trial of Derek Sauvin, the white police officer who killed African-American George Floyd in May 2020, sparked the Black Lives Matter movement and its worldwide mobilization against racism and police violence.
Potter, who collapsed last week when she testified about the incident, showed no emotion today as Judge Retsina Chu announced the verdict. The judge ordered the former police officer to be detained until her sentence was announced.
