US Air Force says drones were seen over its bases in England

Several drones have been spotted over three US Air Force bases in England in the last six days, US authorities said on Tuesday (26).

“Small unmanned aerial systems were sighted in the vicinity of and over RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Feltwell between 20 and 26 November,” a spokesperson told Reuters news agency.

The three bases, two in Suffolk and one in Norfolk, are leased from the United Kingdom by the US Air Force.

Pentagon spokesman Major General Patrick Ryder noted that the American military was treating the incidents seriously.

“Installation leaders have determined thus far that none of these incursions impact base residents, the facilities, or the assets we have on those bases,” Ryder said.

He said small drones were relatively common and it was too early to draw conclusions about whether they were sent by amateurs or not.

However, a US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stressed that it did not appear that the drones were from amateurs and appeared to be coordinated, but added that the military would continue to investigate.

A spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defense highlighted that they “take threats seriously and maintain robust measures” at defense sites.

“We are supporting the US Air Force response,” the spokesperson added.
