US Air Force tests nuclear-capable intercontinental missile

The US Air Force test-fired a long-range nuclear-capable missile on Wednesday, according to the Air Force’s Global Strike Command.

The Minuteman III unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), equipped with three re-entry test vehicles, was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California (USA) and traveled 4,200 miles to Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Oceania .

“These test launches verify the accuracy and reliability of the ICBM weapon system, providing valuable data to ensure a continuous, safe and effective nuclear deterrent,” the statement said.

The US regularly tests its intercontinental weapons system to verify its accuracy and reliability. Such tests have taken place more than 300 times and “are not the result of current world events,” according to the statement.

“America’s nuclear enterprise is the security cornerstone for the freedom of the American people and our allies around the world,” said Colonel Chris Cruise, commander of the 377th Test and Evaluation Group.

“This test launch sends a visible message of deterrence on behalf of our joint forces and global partners, and I couldn’t be more proud of the professionalism of the airmen and Guardians that make up this mission.”
