Advanced hackers have demonstrated the ability to “gain full system access” to multiple industrial control systems, the U.S. government said in a warning issued Wednesday.
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Safety Service said in a joint statement with other government agencies that the affected devices were manufactured by Schneider Electric SCHN.PA and OMRON Corp 6645.T.
Industrial control systems refer to computers operating machines, pipes and other specialized equipment in power plants, refineries, power plants and more.
An official at Dragos, the cybersecurity company that helped uncover the cyber-sabotage tool used by the hackers, said the tool was “very capable” and had probably been in the works for several years.
“It’s as dangerous as humans do,” said Robert Lee, Dragos’ chief executive, in a telephone interview.
