US: Allies send aircraft and spare parts to Ukraine

The Ukrainian armed forces have received military aircraft and spare parts to repair damaged aircraft, the US Pentagon announced on Tuesday.

Ukraine has exceeded the expectations of its allies and military analysts, not only by keeping its Air Force operational almost two months after the start of the Russian invasion, but also by repairing damaged aircraft and, apparently, strengthening its fleet.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby did not provide details on which countries sent the aircraft, but acknowledged that new deliveries had been made, adding that Ukraine now had more fighter jets available than it had two weeks ago.

“They have received additional aircraft and spare parts to help them have more aircraft in the air,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told a news conference, without elaborating. Kirby clarified that Washington did not send any aircraft to Kyiv.

“We certainly supported them by sending more spare parts to help with the needs of their aircraft, but we have not sent any aircraft,” he said.

However, that may soon change. The United States has announced plans to transport Russian helicopters to Ukraine that were previously destined for Afghanistan.

More than 50 days after the start of the war, Ukrainian airspace remains “disputed” in part because of the Ukrainian Air Force and air defense, including the portable surface-to-air missiles offered by the United States and its allies.

This allowed Ukraine to conduct more effective ground operations than if Russia had sovereignty over the ethers, and was able to confront the invading forces from the air.
